Need and Problem Addressed :
Towards ensuring inclusivity with respect to people with disabilities (PWDs) there is a strong need for ensuring accessibility, digital and physical, at all levels.
The Digital tools like web and mobile-apps are now an essential part of our lives.
Need is two-fold – creating greater awareness about accessibility and assisting those who are inclined towards making these platforms accessible.
Overview of the solution :
Marking the 8th Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) a Workshop was conducted at Ramanujan Block of IIIT-Bangalore.
Objective was to create greater awareness about accessibility and bring together various stakeholders working in this space, “to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about accessibility and people with different disabilities”
Execution :
Event was attended by various stakeholders working in the disabilities space in Bangalore.
Besides representation from IIITB and Rotary Club-Disability, it also included speakers and representatives from NGOs and start-ups working in this space including Friends for Inclusion, Vision Empower, Diversity and Equal Opportunity Center (DEOC)
Need for adoption of International and National Standards for Accessibility was emphasized instead of discarding these for easier route, especially for all mainstream ICT applications and products.
There we presentations on some innovative tools and platforms being worked on by different teams.
Besides Accessibility in Digital context, various aspects of Accessibility in Physical context were also discussed.
